Stepped vs Sloped Fence Installation Methods and Benefits

We are certain you’ve noticed that not all yards are perfectly level. Having a yard that is not uniform does not prevent the installation of beautiful fencing. If there is a steep hill or gradual slope, fence panels are installed using the stepping or sloping/racking methods. Occasionally, Liberty Fence & Railing will even create custom-pitched sections to follow very steep grades.

If the land has only a slight change in grade, you can hire a landscaper to level the land before putting up a fence. This will avoid gaps underneath the lower fence rail. If this isn’t an option, there are two ways Liberty Fence & Railing will construct a fence on uneven ground.

Stepped Fence Installation Method

As the name implies, the stepping fence installation method looks like stair steps when complete. Here, the rails of the fence remain horizontal and the posts are extended to accommodate the variance in terrain. Each section is attached to the post to follow the grade. Pre-assembled panels work best when building stepped fences. An advantage of this method is it’s typically the most cost-effective and easiest way to build a fence on a slope.

However, gaps will exist when the fence panels are stepped. For some homeowners, this is not an aesthetic preference, and can allow small pets to escape or other animals to enter the yard. There are options to bridge the gap, such as laying landscaping fill or placing planters along the bottom fence rail.

Sloping/Racking Fence Installation Method

With the sloped or racked installation method, the position of the fence posts are plumb (vertical), but the horizontal rails are mounted at an angle to follow the sloping terrain. Here, there is no space between the bottom of the fence and the ground, thus preventing pets from escaping and keeping unwelcomed animals out.

While the sloping fence installation option provides better sightlines for homeowners and offers a straighter look, it requires individual pieces, not panels.
